Day 10: BEDM Challenge Impressing A Boy: A Cautionary Tale

Today's blog challenge post is a really great one and I had a lot of fun putting together this post.

Most embarrassing moment (s). Spill.

To say the least there was no shortage of material for this bad boy. Haha. Sometimes, I feel like my life is a series of ridiculous events so I had to really think to narrow this down. Since moving abroad there have been the countless times that I have had to resort to pantomiming what I am trying to say because I don't know the Korean word for it, which is always a source of entertainment to the locals. Or the time that I went nearly out of the city on the wrong bus when I was supposed to meet a friend. Or that one time in college at a crew regatta that I had to change shirts to match the rest of my team...ON THE WATER....in front of the racing crowd.

However, for this challenge, I decided to go back, waaaaaay back and I think I picked a winner. In Korea there are escalators for everything and it's pretty much impossible to go throughout your daily routine without taking a couple of them, and when thinking of which story to pick I was inspired by their constant presence.

So there was this one time in high school...don't all truly embarrassing stories begin like this? Anyhow, I was 16, on a school trip, and I had the most MASSIVE crush on this guy in my group. My class group was walking in this museum that we were visiting and when we went to to take the escalators to the second floor one of them was broken. Suddenly, one of the friends of my crush decides that it would be a fantastic idea to run up the broken escalator to beat all the schmucks waiting for the one working people mover.

Who waits in a line?! NOT US, we were fearless.

So the group starts charging up the stairs and my crush looks at me and is all, "I'll beat you to the top." Naturally, I want to impress said crush. UGH. So what do I do? I run UP the broken escalator and TRIP.

BAM! Down, goes Fraizer!

This was pretty much my reaction when I bit the big one.
So, I land in an undignified heap a few steps down from where I started, and what thanks do I get for trying to impress my crush? Does he stop to help me up? Does he EVEN ask if I'm alright? No, he continues to RACE TO THE TOP! By now everyone in the group has seen what has transpired and I am getting heckled like no one's business, because this is high school after all. I pick myself up as dignified as I can and mumble something about the stairs being slippery when one of my mortal enemies gets her obligatory shot in. Life cannot get any MORE embarrassing for me at 16. I pretty much want to die, limp up the stairs, and proceed to melt into the museum wallpaper for the remainder of the trip.
I'm laughing, not crying as I recount this cautionary tale.
The good thing is that when I recall this tumble down the escalator I can't help but die laughing. What was I thinking?! Time has a way of making what seemed like the end of the world into a hilarious story that you can share with blogger friends. Hooray.

Speaking of blogger friends if you are from the BEDM challenge and find me through the link-up let's be friends! Comment, follow, and I'll do the same for you so we can stay connected for the rest of the blog everyday challenge!

  2. Aw, that would be horrifying for anyone, much less a 16 year old! I feel your "I'm trying to impress a boy and failing" pain. Don't worry, we all have our embarrassing high school moments!

  3. I fell going up a DOWN escalator once. It was embarrassing but also painful. I cut my knee, and there was blood everywhere. Not my most embarrassing moment, though. I wrote about mine on my blog today! Have a great weekend!

    1. Apparently escalators are pesky obstacles that just want to take a girl down. Thanks for stopping by and sharing a word! I enjoyed reading your story today. :)

  4. See, just another reason to add to the list of why I don't like escalators. But I was laughing so hard.

    1. Escalators are up to no good and should be sworn off at all costs. I'm glad you laughed because your list of confessions had me cracking up, too.

  6. That's hilarious! And you're right, thank goodness that time heals. I have to say, I was WAY too shy in HS to even attempt something like this. And now that I'm no longer shy (most of the time) I end up saying dumb stuff rather than doing dumb stuff.

    1. Thanks for swing by and commenting. :) One reason that I like living in a foreign country with such a small English speaking population is that I can usually get away with whatever comes out of my mouth...USUALLY, but that's another story.
